The action first takes place in the present, with a new, unknown Assassin Lad from the first-person perspective. The memory in the Helix begins in 1307 and the storming of the Parisian Temple and the capture of the Templars and their Grand Master Jacques de Molay. During the attack, de Molay instructs another Templar brother to play to hide his sword and book. After he an assassin, decreases, it has been stolen again to these artifacts in a crypt to hide, but he is while watching the capture of de Molay, was killed by an assassin. The memory jumps to de Molay’s death on the pyre and his curse against King Philip IV and Pope Clement V before.
At this point, Bishop, Assassin Operations Team Leader, hacks into the current memory sequence and personally asks the player to join the Assassin Brotherhood as a new adept. Bishop shows a top-secret internal Abstergo video memo in which Abstergo describes how they want to use this memory. For this purpose, they want to use the precursor DNA (which is hidden in a triple instead of a double helix) for their own purposes ( Phoenix project ). Bishop offers access to another segment of memory and hopes to learn more about the plans of the Templars.
As with its predecessors, it is an open-world game from the third-person perspective. The game, unlike the predecessor Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, again takes place primarily on land, in the Paris and Versailles of the 18th century. There are seven Parisian and two Versailles districts to visit, in addition, there is still the underground of Paris. The appearance of the different areas is very different, with about every fourth house is enterable. In addition to the familiar stealth passages, for which the cover system was revised again so that Arno can now also move freely, the action-packed battles return in a revised form. In addition to a sword and a pistol, Arno also has at his disposal the new phantom blade, which can shoot berserkers and normal blades, a combination of the classic hidden blade with a small crossbow. During the fighting, a life bar is displayed over the enemies for the first time. The control of the game has been fundamentally revised so that more control is possible in the climbing passages. Similar to classic role-playing games for the first time, there is a skill tree that can be used to improve different abilities, such as sneaking or handling certain weapons.
The game features a co-op multiplayer mode, where two to four players must complete a mission together. Each player assumes the role of an Assassin, with each player seeing himself as Arno. The faces of the three players are simply exchanged, the body model remains the same. Each player can use the skills developed in the single player mode in this mode. These cooperative missions take place alongside the main game and are said to be highly variable by some random elements and approaches. These missions can also be played alone, there is no compulsion to use the co-op mode. The classic competitive multiplayer mode, which was included in several predecessors, will not return for the time being.
